elster
A Reliable Partner for over 750 Years
It was as early as 1848 when Elster began developing technologies
for gas metering and regulation. Innovation, quality and safety have
formed the basis of their success over the years. And even today,
none of that has changed.
It all started with the production of gas lamps and the first mechanical
devices for measuring the consumption of the gas in street lights.
Since then, product development has made rapid progress.
Ultrasonic metering, electronic volume correction as well as modern
data acquisition and evaluation systems are every bit as much a part of
the supply program as the traditional metering and regulating devices.
Nowadays, ELSTER-AMCO operates worldwide together with national
and international associates, a globalisation process which mirrors the
further development of the products. This is one of the most important
company goals. Joint research and development activities guarantee
technological innovations which each of the partner organisations can
then exploit to the benefit of their own specific customers.
ELSTER-AMCO offers a variety of flexible and sophisticated system
solutions which are in line with the requirements of today's markets
and the specific needs of our customers.
For further information on product ranges produced by our affiliated
companies AMCO, IGA, ELSTER-JEAVONS, KROMSCHROEDER or others,

Complete Systems from Elster within ELSTER-AMCO
Whether it's regulation, metering, data collection, data transfer or evaluation,
ELSTER-AMCO offers solutions for every application — customized to the specific needs
of each individual customer — either as single components or complete systems.
The metering and regulation product range covers devices for measuring
consumption which can be used both for custody and non -custody transfer
as well as traditional gas regulators for low, medium and high pressures.
For the field of gas metering, ELSTER-AMCO has also developed volume correctors
and flow computers. These range from temperature volume correctors for commercial
customers to flow computers for stations in the fields of gas distribution and
transportation.
A further example illustrating ELSTER-AMCO's comprehensive systems is the data
collection devices. These are characterised by their flexibility. The components of the
EuroTRACE family and the DL240 data loggers are suitable for collecting consumption
data through pulses. In these cases, the meter readings at the end of the month or
a consumption profile at pre-programmed intervals can be called up as required.
These devices can be used for collecting data from all media (i.e. gas, water, heat,
electricity).
The LIS system in combination with the appropriate components reliably collects
and transfers data for evaluation purposes in the fields of gas, electricity, water and
district heating consumption. They are used by tariff customers, special -contract
customers with varying amounts of consumption and by energy suppliers in
substations.
An important component of these systems is the high-performance readout software
WinCOMS. This software prepares all of the data for billing and fulfils one of the
most important criteria in today's energy world: fast and, to a high degree, automatic
collection of all relevant data. In line with customer parameters, the software collects
the billing data fully automatically at the pre-programmed times and makes them
available to the customer. The transferred data is then processed by the WinVIEW
evaluation software, which then sends the completed data — ready to use —
to the relevant accounts departments. In addition to this, the data can be used as
the basis for advising customers on future strategies.
In the following pages, you will find a few examples

Flow Meters
Turbine Meters /Quantometers
Turbine meters and Ouantometers are flow meters which display the vol-
ume flowing through the device in actual cubic meters. The incoming gas
is accelerated through the inlet body and strikes the blades of the turbine
wheel. The revolutions of the turbine wheel are transferred to an 8 -digit
roller counter via a multi -stage gear and a magnetic coupling.
Turbine meters are used for official metering and billing purposes (custody
transfer). Ouantometers are short -pattern turbine meters with a length of
1.5 x DN. From a metering point of view and in terms of materials, both
types of meters are suitable for use with combustible gases in the field of
energy supply as well as with a variety of technical gases in industrial
applications. All turbine meters have an EU approval and are registered
with the DVGW.

Elster Test Rig Technology
Nowadays, low-pressure test rigs are required to be as flexible as possible while at the same time maintaining the highest
accuracy and the shortest test times possible. Our test rigs meet these requirements in every respect. Master meters operating
with sonic nozzles provide the highest level of long-term stability and precision available in the field of generating flow
conditions and registering volume. On top of this, by combining different nozzles it is possible in a very short time to adjust the
flow rate for the test run. This means that the typical disadvantages of conventional test rigs with low flow rates, e.g. long test
times or a high susceptibility to temperature influences, can be avoided by using sonic nozzle technology.
Gas meter test rigs involve a technical competence which goes far beyond the simple assembly of products. In many countries
throughout the world, from China to Poland and Canada to Argentina, Elster and Kromschr5der are involved in the field of
testing and are reputable partners and consultants of metrological institutes, gas suppliers and manufacturers. Our rigs are
customized to fulfill the specific needs of the customer.
Our supply ranges from individual master meters to complete test rig systems.

Smart metering
Elster range of products and services
Smart metering
Metered for the future.
To promote the protection of the environment,
European countries aim to preserve
energy resources. Consumers should be
aware of and regularly informed of their
energy consumption. Smart metering is
a new technology that provides regular
consumption values using remote readout,
making the end user’s individual
energy consumption more transparent.
The consumer is thus able to systematically
gain energy awareness and reduce
energy costs. With innovative Elster gas
meters for smart metering systems, automated
meter reading is possible at any
time, for example when moving house or
changing supplier. Energy suppliers benefit
from the highest possible level of flexibility.
There is no longer the need to visit the
customers or make estimations in the
event of price alterations. Moreover, they
are already satisfying the legal framework
conditions which state that energy
consumption is to be made transparent
and readout and billing intervals are to
be made shorter. For the attraction of being
able to change the personal use of energy
sustainably is much greater than in the
case of annual consumption billing.
The Absolute ENCODER AE is a modern
index, whose absolute meter reading can
be read out via remote data transfer. For
communication purposes, the AE may be
supplemented with various communication
modules, which allow for cable-based
or wireless data transfer and which contain
a battery. The diaphragm gas meter
with AE index derives its energy from the
mains pressure and thus operates independently
of external energy supply.
Being incorporated into a data management
system, the diaphragm gas meter
with Absolute ENCODER presents an ideal
basis for a smart meter infrastructure
The electronic index is a smart option for
implementing smart metering for diaphragm
gas meters. It offers the possibility
of querying historical data, displaying
tariffs and switching an optionally integrated
valve. The modular design allows
the communication equipment to be retrofitted
or the batteries to be changed even
while it is installed.
A universal and open interface concept,
the Universal Metering Interface (UMI),
has been developed for connecting the
communication modules to the meter.
This allows the gas meter to be fitted or
retrofitted with a communication module
under economic conditions. UMI may be
universally implemented in measuring
instruments for electricity, gas, water and
heat meters, as well as in data concentrators,
in-home displays and other units.
Regarding encryption, authentication and
authorization UMI satisfies the most stringent
security requirements
The data is usually read out via a wireless
or a cable-based connection. Using Internet-based
applications, it is possible for
both energy suppliers and consumers
to check the current daily, monthly and
annual meter readings. In addition to
meters for smart metering, Elster’s range
of products and services also covers the
necessary components for data communication
and for networking the different
system components.
Smart metering
Elster range of products and services
A smart extension to proven technologyAs an extension to the purely mechanical diaphragm gas meters, which have been proving their worth for decades, there are numerous variants available for smart gas metering and remote gas data transfer.
Absolute ENCODER AE
The Absolute ENCODER index for diaphragm gas meters consists of a mechanical index in
which 7 individual digit rollers are opto-electronically scanned and read out. The data is
then continually transferred as a data word via a digital interface to the connected communication
modules, whereby permanent data transfer security is guaranteed compared
with the conventional transfer of pulses. The Absolute ENCODER’s consistent modular design
minimizes the efforts and expenditure of installation, commissioning and data provision
and ensures investment security for future applications. The Absolute ENCODER AE can be
retrofitted with cable-based or wireless communication even after installation in the network.
Electronic index themis
The electronic index themis for diaphragm gas meters offers a display and further functions
such as local and remote communication, tariffs, load profiles, valve control, data
logging, and software update. A wide range of communications solutions are available for
the themis index, which guarantee the authenticity and integrity of the data transferred
between the communications partners and also allow granting authorization to users. A
secure, remotely controlled software update and the modular principle guarantee that the
technology is future-proof and that it can be adjusted to meet new challenges retrospectively
at low cost if necessary. The electronic index themis is applicable for both residential
and commercial & industrial use. Different variants of the electronic index are available:
themis-alpha, themis-plus, and themis-log. The indexes are supplied ready-configured,
thus vastly reducing installation work.
Valve Ve
By replacing conventional diaphragm gas meters, smart meters with additional functionality
can be used, e.g. remote connection and disconnection of the gas supply internally within
the meter itself. This significantly reduces the costs and labour caused by consumers in
default of payment. The integrated valve in the diaphragm gas meter allows the gas supply
to be remotely connected and disconnected. The integrated valve detects if the valve is
closed or opened and provides a safe re-establishment of the gas supply with a protection
against unintentional opening of the valve: Gas supply is only enabled once all of the customer’s
gas appliances are closed.
Energy suppliers count on Absolute ENCODER technology
One of the largest energy suppliers in
Germany has now put its trust in Elster
diaphragm gas meters with Absolute
ENCODER technology, following a number
of pilot projects. The advantages are obvious:
no batteries in the metrologyrelevant part of
the meter, absolute meter readings, simple
installation without additional costs involved
in parameter setting, and an index whose
service life corresponds to that of the meter.
Furthermore, the interface design of the
Absolute ENCODER index offers complete
flexibility for installation. Elster is looking forward
to being a reliable partner for you for
future innovative product solutions
